With temperatures expected to rise in the coming days, beaches in Westport, Norwalk, and Fairfield were forced to be closed to swimming as health officials deal with a weekend sewage leak.
On Monday, Aug. 5, tests determined that waters were not safe for swimming. Swimming areas subjected to the sewage list are expected to be tested again on Tuesday morning.
All beaches in Westport, including Sherwood Island State Park, and in Norwalk and Fairfield will be off-limits following the leak, which was reported at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, when a sewer main ruptured near the shore of the River in Westport.
"We identified the need to replace the current sewer pipe three years ago and were very close to completion," First Selectman Jim Marpe said in a statement. "My thanks go out to the town and state departments in their prompt and appropriate response to the incident."
“The Westport Health Department advises that swimming in the river and Westport Coastal waters should be discontinued until the leak has been stopped and the water is determined safe for swimming,” a notice over the weekend stated.
A meeting regarding the spill has been scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday at Westport Town Hall.
